Need Help Understanding the Calculator?

Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered. Below, you’ll find clear explanations for each question, so you can provide the right figures and get the most accurate estimate possible.

I Have an Adult Dependant

Tick this box if you financially support an adult, such as a partner or a relative, who depends on your income.

Living Arrangement

Indicate where you’ll live during your studies:
• Living with parents: If you’ll stay at home with your family.
• Away from home: If you’ll live in rented accommodation or university housing.
• In London: If you’ll live within Greater London, as funding differs for this location.

Total Household Income (£)

Select the range that matches the total annual income of your household before tax. For dependent students, include your parents’ or guardians’ income. Independent students should include their own and their partner’s income, if applicable.

Dependant’s Income (£)

If you have an adult dependant, select their income range before tax. This helps calculate additional support you may be eligible for.

I Have Dependent Children

Tick this box if you have children who rely on you financially. The Parents’ Learning Allowance is available for children up to 18 years old, while the Childcare Grant applies to children up to 15 years old (or up to 17 if they have special needs).

I Have a Disability

Tick this box if you have a disability, long-term health condition, mental health condition, or specific learning difficulty (e.g., dyslexia or ADHD). This will help determine your potential eligibility for Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSA).

DSA is a non-repayable financial support package that covers extra costs directly related to your condition while studying. It can provide funding for specialist equipment (e.g., assistive software or ergonomic tools), non-medical support like tutors or mentors, travel costs if you’re unable to use public transport, and other study-related expenses.

This allowance is available to students whose conditions impact their ability to study, including physical disabilities, mental health conditions, learning difficulties, and sensory impairments. Selecting this option ensures the calculator includes this in your estimate and helps you plan for your higher education needs effectively.
